Micromachining of AlN and Al2O3 Using Fiber Laser
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report on high precision high speed micromachining of Al2O3 and AlN using pulsed near infrared fiber laser. Ablation thresholds are determined to be 30 J/cm2 for alumina and 18 J/cm2 for aluminum nitride. The factors influencing the efficiency and quality of 3D micromachining, namely the surface roughness, the material removal rate and the ablation depth accuracy are determined as a function of laser repetition rate and pulse overlap. Using a fluence of 64 J/cm2, we achieve a material removal rate of up to 94 mm3/h in Al2O3 and 135 mm3/h in AlN for high pulse overlaps (89% and 84%). A minimum roughness of 1.5 μm for alumina and 1.65 μm for aluminum nitride can be accomplished for medium pulse overlaps (42% to 56%). In addition, ablation depth deviation of the micromachining process of smaller than 8% for alumina and 2% for aluminum nitride are achieved. Based on these results, by structuring exemplarily 3D structures we demonstrate the potential of high quality and efficient 3D micromachining using pulsed fiber laser.

متن کاملMicromachining with a High Repetition Rate Femtosecond Fiber Laser
Industrial micromachining applications with ultrashort pulse lasers are often difficult to make practical due to the lack of robustness of the laser and the slow processing speed resulting from the low repetition rate. In the past, amplified, femtosecond lasers produced high pulse energies, but at a slow pulse repetition rate of around a kHz. The high repetition rate oscillators did not have en...
متن کاملFabrication of High-Q Microresonators by Femtosecond Laser Micromachining of Optical Fiber
We report a technique to fabricate whispering gallery mode microdisk resonators using femtosecond laser micromachining and a heat reflow process to improve the optical quality of the resonator. The fabricated resonators had suppressed higher order modes with a measured Q-factor as high as 7.2× 10. The described fabrication process, which relies on material non-thermal laser ablation, offers the...
متن کاملFabrication of an integrated high-quality-factor (high-Q) optofluidic sensor by femtosecond laser micromachining.
We report on fabrication of a microtoroid resonator of a high-quality factor (i.e., Q-factor of ~3.24 × 10(6) measured under the critical coupling condition) integrated in a microfluidic channel using femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. Coupling of light into and out of the microresonator has been realized with a fiber taper that is reliably assembled with the microtoroid. ...

We report on damage-free fiber-guidance of milli-Joule energy-level and 600-femtosecond laser pulses into hypocycloid core-contour Kagome hollow-core photonic crystal fibers. Up to 10 meter-long fibers were used to successfully deliver Yb-laser pulses in robustly single-mode fashion. Different pulse propagation regimes were demonstrated by simply changing the fiber dispersion and gas. Self-comp...
